Maya Angelou was an undeniable force. She was a poet, memoirist, and activist whose work found admiration across the globe. She followed the tradition of the Harlem Renaissance authors, many of whom she met at various points throughout her life. She worked alongside the most notable Civil Rights activists, including Martin Luther King Jr. She was close friends with James Baldwin and Oprah Winfrey. She even mentored Tupac Shakur briefly after meeting him on the set of the film Poetic Justice. A pillar of the Black community, Angelou spoke deliberately and proudly of her culture and era. She was also one of the most talented poets of the century. In Celebrations: Rituals of Peace and Prayer, Angelou provides a collection of new and previously published poetry, much of it reading like mantras or affirmations themed around both social and spiritual peace. The collection also includes “On the Pulse of Morning” which she read at President Bill Clinton’s 1993 Inauguration.

This inscribed first edition is in fine condition. In the original casing, near-fine with only bumping to foot of spine. Text block fine. Angelou’s inscription appears on the half-title page. In the original dust jacket, fine.

A wonderfully inscribed first edition of Maya Angelou’s Celebrations.
