Calvin Coolidge was America’s 30th president. He became president upon the death of William Harding. He then served one term. Coolidge chose not to run for a second term, claiming to have been president longer than he preferred already. Coolidge passed major reforms. He granted citizenship to all Native Americans. He was a supporter of women’s suffrage. Yet he also held conservative economic views and pushed so-called “small government” economic policies that foregrounded the Great Depression. In this volume, A Puritan in Babylon, Coolidge’s life and presidency are reflected upon by author William Allen White. White was a progressive activist and journalist. He published numerous books during the era. He also earned the Pulitzer Prize in Journalism in 1923. A Puritan in Babylon is considered one of his best works and a classic of presidential biography.
