Lois Lowry is an American author of young-adult fiction. She has been awarded two Newbery Medals. Her works are consistently some of the bestselling YA fiction. They are known for their dystopian settings, their tactful approaches to difficult subjects, and their engaging plots. The Giver is her most celebrated work. It is the story of Jonas, a young boy who lives in a seemingly perfect society. But when Jonas is assigned the stringent role of Receiver–a person who handles society’s memories and histories, and reads its forbidden books–he slowly learns about the dystopian nature of his community. The Giver is often cited as one of the best YA novels of the last several decades. It is often assigned reading in schools. It is also a frequently challenged book because of its dark subject matter, criticisms of religion and dogma, and depictions of violence.
