Four Confederate Notes. Issued by the Treasury of the Confederate States. Richmond, 1861-1863.

$250.00

At the onset of the American Civil War, the Confederate states quickly began issuing their own currency. It was not backed by material assets–just the promise of future value upon the successful victory of the Confederate armies and the defeat of the Union. This currency system was deeply flawed, of course, resulting in rampant inflation, forgeries, and a massive amount of debt. When the Confederacy was defeated, the currency immediately became useless, making many Southerners destitute after investing their fortunes in a literally and morally bankrupt cause. Today these currency notes are quite collectible. The old graybacks showcase some of the delusion underlying what would have been a pro-slavery society. They have a wide range of designs and values. They remain important historical features of the Civil War era.

These four notes are in fair condition. With tears, creases, chipping, and fading. Ten dollar 1861 note cancelled. The set includes:

  • 1861 $100 note (T-13)
  • 1861 $10 note (T-30)
  • 1862/3 $2 note (T-54)
  • 1863 $10 note (T-52)

Original Confederate currency from the 1860s.
