In the early 1980s, computer technology broadened its reach with the advent of home computers. These early desktop devices invited people from all walks of life to learn the possibilities inherent in computers. One unforeseen consequence of that broadened impact, however, was a growing level of cyber crime. From software piracy to security breaches, early home computers put users at a heightened risk. In The Computer Underground, author M. Harry compiles what is essentially a manual of computer crime from the period. The work draws most of its information from hackers in the 1980s who were typically teenagers with home computers and brilliant, self-taught abilities to conduct complex computer crime. The work was published by Loompaniacs Unlimited, a notorious publisher of subversive and criminal materials. It is probably the earliest hacker manual ever published–a work not unlike The Anarchist Cookbook, but one more deeply informed by the predominant technology of its time.
