American photographer Annie Leibovitz is one of the most celebrated photographic artists of her generation. Her career ascended in the 1970s as a portrait photographer for many of the most notable rock & roll musicians of the era. She went on to work for Vanity Fair, Vogue, and numerous other magazines. Her work has been exhibited in the finest museums as well. In Women, Leibovitz turns her eye to women of every kind. It contains portraits of celebrities, artists, athletes, politicians, and working-class women. Notable examples include portraits of Sandra Day O’Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Toni Morrison, Christina Ricci, Lil Kim, and many others. Yet for every celebrity, there are examples of school teachers, showgirls, soldiers, factory workers–women of every background. It is considered by many to be Leibovitz’s greatest book of photography. It also contains an essay by Susan Sontag. Sontag and Leibovitz were longtime friends and artistic collaborators. In Women, Sontag’s essay stands out among her work as well. It captures the power of Leibovitz’s portraits and the universal experiences of women regardless of their varied backgrounds.
This first edition, first printing is inscribed by Leibovitz on the half-title page. It is in very good condition. In the original casing, about-fine with only bumping to spine ends and bottom edge of front board. Text block fine. In the original dust jacket, very good with some rubbing, chipping, and creases to edges.
A very good first edition of Women inscribed by Annie Leibovitz.
