American author Gregory Maguire is a master of fiction for both children and adults. He has written dozens of novels, the widely acclaimed being his Wicked series. They revitalized the Oz universe by subverting its politics and characterizations, revealing counternarratives for the Wicked Witch of the West and others. In this volume, however, Maguire lends his talents to a different and older story: the timeless narrative of Cinderella. But in Maguire’s version, it is told from the perspective of Iris, one of the homely stepsisters. Her view of events sheds darker and more humorous light to the original story. It also reveals her origins–complex, looming, and serious. It is a particularly noteworthy title among Maguire’s many brilliant books. At the time of its publication, it was considered a brief yet excellent departure from the Wicked series.
