Wicked. Inscribed by Gregory Maguire. First Edition, First Printing. HarperCollins. New York, 1995.
$2,750.00
American author Gregory Maguire is a master of fiction for both children and adults. He has written dozens of novels, but none are so widely acclaimed as Wicked. It revitalized the Oz universe by subverting its politics and characterizations, revealing counternarratives for the Wicked Witch of the West and others. Maguire’s novel is decidedly more adult, too, reading more like sharp literary fiction than the pure fantasy of L. Frank Baum’s work. Wicked was a surprise bestseller. It elevated Maguire to the forefront of American fiction. In 2003, Wicked was also adapted to the Tony Award-winning musical starring Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth. It is considered one of the best Broadway shows of the era. Then in 2024, it was adapted into a two-part film starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, both highly acclaimed. This inscribed first edition includes an original drawing by Maguire. It also comes with the exceptionally scarce original Playbill, ticket stub, and promotional leaf from the world premiere of the musical at Curran Theatre in 2003 (preceding its Broadway debut).
This first edition, first printing is inscribed by Maguire with an original drawing on the half-title page. It is in near-fine condition. In the original casing, near-fine with only bumping to spine ends. Text block fine. In the original dust jacket, near-fine with only minor bumping and closed tears to spine ends. Laid in Playbill, ticket stub, and promotional leaf fine.
