Chilean author Roberto Bolaño published novels, essays, and stories that set him apart from the authors of his generation. His works are often long. They are rich in characterization and detail and fascinating tangents. They are postmodern and deeply connected to the histories and lives of Latin Americans in the twenty-first century. Bolaño proudly broke from magical realist traditions as well, producing works with more explicit elements. 2666 was published posthumously. It is widely considered his best novel. The original Spanish version won numerous awards, as did the 2008 English translation by Natasha Wimmer. It tells a fragmented story about serial murders in a South American city, a mysterious author named Archimboldi, a group of literary scholars and lovers, and much more. It is a challenging novel on many levels, but deeply rewarding. 2666 solidified Bolaño’s place among the greatest authors of the early twenty-first century.
