Mickey Mantle was one of the best professional baseball players of all time. He played center field for the New York Yankees in the 1950s and 60s, helping the team to an absurd number of World Series. Over the course of his career, he appeared in twelve championships, winning seven. His appearances were marked by outstanding play. He holds records for most World Series home runs, RBIs, and many other records. In 1974, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. In My Favorite Summer 1956, Mantle recounts his greatest season–the year he was named American League MVP and Triple Crown winner. The memoir is full of baseball highlights, but also personal details about Mantle’s friendships and rivalries with fellow players, and nostalgia for the 1950s in general. Co-authored with Phil Pepe, it is a wonderfully written sports memoir capturing the pinnacle of one of baseball’s greatest careers.
