The Game of Chess. By Edward Lasker. First Edition, First Printing. Doubleday. New York, 1972.
$45.00
Edward Lasker was a German-American engineer and inventor as well as an International Master chess player. He competed against some of the best players of the era, including Capablanca and his distant relative Emanuel Lasker. In the 1910s and early 1920s, he was considered the best chess player in the U.S. He also published numerous chess books that are today considered some of the best guides on the game from the century. Among them, The Game of Chess stands out as his last published book and his most comprehensive. It is written for true amateurs, but extends its suggestions to more complicated aspects of the game. It also contains diagrams and references to important matches in the twentieth century.
This first edition, first printing is in very good condition. In the original quarter cloth, good with some soiling, bumping and tear to head of spine. Boards soiled along edges. Text block very good, only former bookseller sticker to front pastedown, minor foxing to edges, and a few pages creased with small tears. In the original dust jacket, very good with minor chips, creases, and toning.
A very good first edition of this highspot among twentieth century chess books.
