Politicians, political activists, and economists have long been preoccupied with the problem of inflation. Yet it is the general public who deals with inflation most directly. In this informational pamphlet, the Socialist Labor Party addresses inflation for the average person, explaining its causes and dispelling myths about it in accessible language. It makes clear that inflation is not caused by livable wages–a common bit of misinformation propagated by right-wing politicians and media–but rather, inflation is the result of things like the debasement of currency, hyperinflation, and the concentration of wealth. This pamphlet takes these ideas from Arnold Andersen’s original 1942 essay on the subject: “Inflation of prices or deflation of labor?” Andersen was the Socialist Labor Party’s National Secretary for decades. He authored numerous works on socialism and economics and helped to promote the party in the twentieth century. This pamphlet does not contain the exact text of Andersen’s 1942 essay, but it repackages his ideas in more accessible language. It is a great example of the outreach that the Socialist Labor Party endeavored in the mid-twentieth century.
