John Hersey was a popular novelist and journalist in the twentieth century. He is typically associated with New Journalism and his 1946 work Hiroshima. His first novel A Bell for Adano also won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1945, setting the stage for Hersey’s long writing career. He was a professor at Yale, teaching creative writing courses for many years as well as supporting social causes on campus and internationally. Between the 1940s and 1990s, he published roughly two dozen book-length works as one of America’s most acclaimed authors. Of his many works, The Walnut Door was highly regarded by critics. It is the narrative of a mid-twentieth century love affair that captivates readers through its rich characterization and its timely portrayal of the post-1960s cultural landscape. It remains one of his most popular works.
