American author William S. Burroughs was a major literary figure in the Beats movement. His work is known for its surrealism, satire, and depictions of drugs, sex, and countercultures. His novels are classics of the era, influencing numerous postmodern authors who followed him. Probably none is more widely regarded and controversial than Naked Lunch. Its depictions of drug use, body horror, and perversions caused a cultural and legal stir, making it one of the most banned books of the era. Naked Lunch was even famously put to trial in Massachusetts with a court deciding it was mere obscenity. The ruling was later overturned, however. But still, its challenges led to wider publicity and readership. Fellow authors, including Allen Ginsberg and Norman Mailer, praised the work. Its nonlinear plot and unabashed descriptions influenced numerous other postmodernists. It remains Burroughs’ most widely read novel.

This first American edition, first printing is in very good condition. In the original cloth and paper boards, about-fine with only minor rubbing and fading. Text block near-fine, only very minor soiling to edges. Top edge dyed blue. In the original first state dust jacket with no zip code, very good with only chipping, bumping, creases, and small closed tears to edges. This first American edition is preceded only by the 1959 Olympia Press editions.
