Joyce Carol Oates is a prolific American author who consistently publishes exceptional literary fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. Her career began in the 1960s with critically acclaimed novels and short stories. Since then, she has been awarded some of the most prestigious literary awards, including the National Book Award and two O. Henry Awards. She has also been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction an astounding five times. With Shuddering Fall was her first novel and just her second book-length work. It contains many of the themes, qualities, and characterizations so emblematic of Oates’ literary career. Critics praised the work but it was not a major bestseller. It did, however, establish Oates’ career, and among her dedicated readers, With Shuddering Fall is a favorite.
This first edition, first printing is inscribed by Oates on the flyleaf. It is in very good condition. In the original cloth with paper over the edge of the front board, near-fine with only minor bumping to edges. Text block fine. Top edge dyed red. In the original dust jacket, very good with only rubbing, creases, chipping, and closed tears to edges.
A very good inscribed first edition of Joyce Carol Oates’ first novel. Scarce.
