William Gibson is one of the most influential science fiction authors of the late twentieth century. He is largely credited with establishing the cyberpunk subgenre. His early novels and stories incorporated biotechnology, information technology, and computer networks in highly speculative–yet eerily predictive–ways. His debut novel, Neuromancer, is the most famous example. It is a dystopian narrative set in a near-future defined by artificial intelligence, hackers, ubiquitous computing, and major tech corporations–all conceived before the widespread use of the Internet or the home computer. This volume, Count Zero, is the sequel to Neuromancer. It is Gibson’s second novel ever published. It picks up in the same speculative dystopia and broadens the world’s notion of cyberspace, a concept Gibson is credited with popularizing in fiction. Count Zero is also considered one of his greatest works. It was nominated for the Nebula, Hugo, and Locus Awards in 1987. It remains a cyberpunk highspot and one of the best speculative sci-fi novels of the era.
