The Hunting of the Snark. By Lewis Carroll. Illustrated by Cobbledick. Illustrated Trade Edition. Peter Pauper Press. Mount Vernon, Circa 1945.

$40.00

Lewis Carroll enjoyed a sudden rise in acclaim with the publication of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Readers across the world enjoyed the eccentric and whimsical qualities of his work. Carroll was also a successful mathematician, and while his narratives and poetry may seem absurd, there is usually a veiled logic to them. This is especially true in The Hunting of the Snark. First published in 1876, it is usually classified as a nonsense poem. The stanzas and lines describe incomprehensible imagery and detail, but in structured syllables and rhyme schemes. It remains a favorite among Carroll’s works.

This illustrated trade edition is in very good condition. In the original decorated boards, very good with only fading to spine and foxing to spine label. Text block near-fine. Former owner’s lengthy gift inscription to front free endpaper. In the original slipcase, very good with only chipping and rubbing to edges and minor fading.

A very good illustrated trade edition of The Hunting of the Snark.
