In Our Time. By Ernest Hemingway. Second Edition, First Printing. Scribner’s. New York, 1930.

$600.00

In 1924, Ernest Hemingway published his first short story in book form, a small run of only 170 copies of slim volumes titled In Our Time. The next year, Boni & Liveright published his first story collection under the same name. It was critically praised, especially by Hemingway’s contemporary modernists, but it was not a major commercial success. Six years later, however, Hemingway’s career had ascended to great heights with the bestseller A Farewell to Arms. In turn, Scribner’s issued this second edition of Hemingway’s early short story collection, revised with a new introduction by Edmund Wilson. It is considered today a critical volume in Hemingway’s development as an artist. It contains all of the best stylistic elements of Hemingway’s prose and plots, but in short, concise narrations. This second edition is also sought-after for its introduction wherein Edmund Wilson encapsulates the burgeoning career of a great American author.

This second edition, first printing is in very good condition. In the original black cloth, very good with only minor bumping and rubbing. Pasted labels to spine and front board very good with only chipping and rubbing. Text block near fine. Former owner’s signature to front free endpaper. Some pencil highlights in the introduction. Lacking the scarce original dust jacket.

A very good second edition of In Our Time.
