Thomas Coraghessan Boyle, better known as TC Boyle, is a prolific fiction writer who has published dozens of works since the 1970s. His accolades include several O. Henry Awards, a PEN/Faulkner Award, and the Kenyon Review Award for Literary Achievement. He’s also been a National Book Award finalist and his short stories regularly appear in the Best American Stories collections. At times humorous, other times bleak, Boyle is a writer’s writer who appeals to people with a literary–albeit modern–sensibility. He is also known for weaving historical facts into his works, but often with a touch of the magical, and for addressing themes of neuroticism, misguided heroes, and the environment. This volume, The Harder They Come, explores a complicated family dynamic between a war veteran, his troubled son, and his son’s lover. The characters are all properly messed up in ways that are emblematic of Boyle’s style. The story eventually culminates in tragedy. The work received mostly high praise from critics, making it one of the more popular Boyle novels of the last decade.
