The Deep. By Peter Benchley. First Edition, First Printing. Doubleday. New York, 1976.

$30.00

Peter Benchley’s literary career catapulted to incredible heights after the publication of Jaws in 1974. The novel was a bestseller, catching the attention of many filmmakers for its high concept narrative. Benchley ended up co-writing the screenplay for the 1975 film which was directed by Stephen Spielberg. A year later, he published The Deep, an equally ominous ocean horror, but rather than a tremendous shark as its monster, The Deep entangles its characters and readers alike with an irresistible mystery that pulls us downward, underneath the sea. It was also made into a blockbuster film, starring Nick Nolte, Jacqueline Bisset, and Robert Shaw.

This first edition, first printing is in good condition. In the original cloth boards, very good with only bumping, rubbing, and soiling. Text block near-fine, only former owner’s signature to free endpaper. In the original dust jacket, good with some rubbing, chipping, creases, and closed tears to edges.

A good first edition by Peter Benchley.
