Sophie’s Choice. Signed by William Styron. Signed Limited Edition. Easton Press. Norwalk, 1999.

$130.00

American author William Styron published literary classics in the twentieth century. He is most remembered for The Confessions of Nat Turner and Sophie’s Choice. They won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award, respectively. Yet both works met controversy, and Styron subsequently became known as a polarizing author despite the unanimous praise of his command of prose and characterization. In Sophie’s Choice, his last novel, critics largely aimed their sights on the work’s portrayal of the Holocaust and for its sexually explicit content. Still, the work became a bestseller and its detractors could not deny its brilliantly depicted protagonist. In 1982, it was also adapted to film starring Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline. The film was nominated for several Academy Awards, with Meryl Streep winning Best Actress.

This signed limited edition is in fine condition. In the original full leather, finely gilt stamped. Raised bands. Silk moire endpapers and bookmark sewn in. Text block fine. Gilt edges. Styron’s signature appears on the limitation page.
