Daniel Woodrell is an American author known for his country noir narratives. His fiction is often set in the Ozarks. It blends crime, thriller, and rural culture together in popular yet literary ways. Woodrell grew up in Missouri. He joined the Marines then returned to pursue a writing career, earning an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and publishing several short stories. His career continues to today. He has published nine novels. Winter’s Bone is perhaps his most commercially successful. It follows Ree Dolly as she unravels a rural criminal conspiracy involving her missing father. The novel was praised by readers and critics alike. In 2010, it was also adapted to film, starring Jennifer Lawrence. The film was also critically praised, receiving numerous awards, including four Academy Award nominations.
