Waterfront. By Budd Schulberg. First Edition, First Printing. Random House. New York, 1955.

$55.00

Budd Schulberg was an American writer who made lasting contributions to film, fiction, and sports writing. Of his many works, perhaps none are as significant as the screenplay On the Waterfront. The film was a major success in 1954. It stars Marlon Brando, Lee J. Cobb, and Eva Marie Saint. Leonard Bernstein composed the score. It is widely considered one of the best films ever made. It won Schulberg an Academy Award for Best Screenplay. Following its success, Random House published Shulberg’s novelization of the screenplay in 1955. This volume subsequently represents a rare film-to-novel adaptation. Yet the novel was praised for its standalone qualities. It strays from the film version at times, fleshing out details and changing sequences in ways that make it its own work altogether.

This first edition, first printing is in very good condition. In the original full cloth, very good with only minor bumping and fading to edges. Text block near fine, only minor fading to endpapers. In the original dust jacket, very good with only minor closed tears, chips, and creases. Price clipped.

A very good first edition of Waterfront by Budd Schulberg.
