When the Devil Was Well. By Robert Louis Stevenson. Limited First Edition, First Printing. Bibliophile Society. Boston, 1921.

$75.00

Robert Louis Stevenson composed some of the best adventure novels of all time, including Treasure Island and Kidnapped. His gothic fiction, including Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, is also widely regarded. Yet this short work of gothic fiction was not published until after his death. When the Devil Was Well would have likely never been discovered if not for acclaimed book collector and dealer A.S.W. Rosenbach, one of the twentieth century’s greatest bibliophiles. He acquired Stevenson’s manuscripts and found among them a nearly finished draft of When the Devil Was Well. This limited first edition was set from these manuscripts and even includes a facsimile page. It is a spectacular addition to Stevenson’s titles, an exciting and dark tale well-situated among his gothic works.

This limited first edition is in very good condition. It is one of only 450 copies privately printed by the Bibliophile Society of Boston. In the original half vellum and green cloth variant, very good with only rubbing and bumping to edges. Text block fine, unopened. Printed on Alexandria wove paper. Bibliophile Society limitation and emblem in the front matter. Endpapers on Old Stratford paper with only minor foxing. With the original two slipcases, very good with only chipping and rubbing, and fading to spine label.

A very good limited first edition of this posthumously published story by Robert Louis Stevenson.
