Kazuo Ishiguro is a leading British author of our era. He is the recipient of both the Booker Prize and the Nobel Prize for Literature. His literary fiction is spare, powerful, and character-driven. His narrators are vivid and accessible except where it tactfully serves the plot. Perhaps no living author has mastered the narrator as well as Ishiguro–a quality at its finest in this classic novel, The Remains of the Day. Its protagonist is the butler of Darlington Hall who serves perfectly for decades. Through keen observation, foresight, and sincerity, the narrator shows readers the strata of social life between himself, his employers, his staff, and his family. It is widely considered one of the best novels of the last 100 years. It won the Booker Prize in 1989 and established Ishiguro as one of the best living authors. The novel was adapted into a film of the same name in 1993 and boasts a star-studded cast that includes Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, and Christopher Reeve.

This first edition, second printing is signed by Ishiguro on the title page. It is in near-fine condition. In the original full black cloth, near-fine with only bump to back board. Text block fine. In the original dust jacket, near-fine with only fading to spine. Publisher’s Booker Prize Shortlist sticker attached to front panel. This second printing was done after the novel had been shortlisted, but before it had won the Book Prize.

A scarce signed early printing of The Remains of the Day.
