Albert Schweitzer was one of the twentieth century’s greatest minds. He was a musician, scholar, physician, philosopher, and theologian. In 1952, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian work and his philosophy called the Reverence for Life. This philosophy was developed through decades of missionary work as a physician–through two world wars and missions in Africa. At the same time, he managed to make lasting contributions to the Organ Reform Movement, leading critically praised performances, developing new methods of recording, and writing extensively as a musicologist. For all these achievements, he ranks high among the most versatile polymaths of the era. In this slim volume–Peace or Atomic War?–a concerned Schweitzer applies his philosophical expertise to the era’s greatest issue: nuclear proliferation. In clear appeals to the world public, he raises the case against nuclear war. The three sections of the work are transcribed from his radio broadcasts. His appeals, published here for the first time in book-form, are regarded as some of the most concise and important commentary on the nuclear arms race.

This first edition, first printing is in very good condition. In the original blue buckram, near-fine with only fading to edges and rubbing to corners. Text block near-fine, only former owner’s inscription to front pastedown. In the original dust jacket, very good with minor chips, closed tears, rubbing and creases.

A very good first edition of Albert Schweitzer’s appeal to end the nuclear arms race.
