Our Polar Flight. By Roald Amundsen, Lincoln Ellsworth, and Others. First Edition, Second Printing. Dodd, Mead & Co. New York, 1925.

$260.00

In 1925, acclaimed polar explorer Roald Amundsen received funds from an American benefactor, James Ellsworth, to attempt an aerial exploration of the North Pole. As part of the agreement, Ellsworth’s son, Lincoln Ellsworth, would join the expedition. While at the time aerial exploration was potentially less physically taxing than excursions by land or sea, it was no less dangerous. This proved especially true when the Amundsen-Ellsworth expedition failed, with two planes’ worth of explorers separated and stranded on the polar ice. In a harrowing experience, the groups found each other. They then cleared many tons of snow and ice to free their one operable plane. It took them several weeks–weeks of heavy labor and minimal rations, weeks of fearing the bitter cold, polar bears, and starvation. Yet in a remarkable triumph, they were able to squeeze all expedition members into the one plane and eventually take off, returning to safety. In this volume, published shortly after their return, the whole experience is recounted in detail. Chapters are compiled from Amundsen’s introduction, Ellsworth’s contributions, and with journal entries by other team members from the days stranded on the ice. Alongside the text are original photographs taken before, during, and after the expedition. It is a remarkable text, ranking high among polar expedition narratives at a time when many explorers were pursuing a claim to be the first to reach the North Pole.

This first edition, second printing is in very good condition. In the original blue cloth boards, very good with only rubbing to spine ends and corners, minor soiling to front board, and very minor spots and rubbing to both boards. Text block near-fine, only very minor occasional creases and foxing. Gilt to boards and spine bright. Photographic illustrations superb.

A very good early printing of the Amundsen-Ellsworth Polar Flight.
