Women in Love. By D.H. Lawrence. Illustrated by Dennis Luzak. Limited Edition. Franklin Library. Franklin Center, 1979.

$55.00

D.H. Lawrence was a versatile English author who made great strides in the Modernist literary movement of the twentieth century. His poetry was prolific, sometimes applying new forms of imagery and line structure that stood out among the work from his era. Yet his novels remain his most lasting contributions and Women in Love is perhaps his greatest achievement. First published in 1920, it is a sequel to his earlier work, The Rainbow, taking for its subject the adult lives of the Brangwen sisters who reside in England. They develop relationships with two men in their town, and ultimately their dialogue and interactions become a backdrop for explorations of sexuality, politics, society, and gender. Like most of Lawrence’s novels, Women in Love met major controversy for its sexual content. Literary critics, however, elevated the work as one of the best from the era. It is still consistently ranked one of the best novels ever written. Such praise continues in this limited edition by the Franklin Library. It is part of their 100 Greatest Books of All Time series. Paired with the text are Dennis Luzak’s striking illustrations, making it a richly adorned and engaging representation of the text.

This limited edition is in fine condition. In the original full blue leather boards, finely gilt stamped. Raised bands. Gilt spine label. Text block fine. Gilt edges. Silk moire endpapers and bookmark sewn in. Luzak’s illustrations superb.

A fine collector’s copy of Women in Love.
