The Destinies of Darcy Dancer, Gentleman. By J.P. Donleavy. Illustrated by Jim Campbell. Limited First Edition. Franklin Library. Franklin Center, 1977.

$35.00

J.P. Donleavy was a critically and commercially successful author in the twentieth century. Born to Irish immigrant parents, his works often include the perspectives of Irish-Americans in the post-WWII era. His first novel, The Ginger Man, was hugely popular but also widely banned for its supposed obscenities and dark humor. In this volume, The Destinies of Darcy Dancer, Gentleman, readers are introduced to another episodic, humorous tale, encapsulating much of Donleavy’s usual style, but at a point in his life where he had mastered his craft. This limited first edition by the Franklin Library presents the work beautifully alongside Jim Campbell’s illustrations.

This limited first edition is in fine condition. In the original firebrick leather boards with elaborate gilt and green stamping. Raised bands. Gilt spine label. Text block fine. Gilt edges. Silk moire endpapers and bookmark sewn in. With the publisher’s original First Edition Society pamphlet laid in.

A fine collector’s copy by J.P. Donleavy.
