Cooking With Wine. By Nell Heaton. Second Edition. Faber & Faber. London, 1963.

Nell Heaton was a celebrated gastronome in the mid 20th century, publishing several books that ushered in an era of international culinary exchange. Her Complete Cookbook was an incredibly popular post-WWII culinary text. Her collaboration with Andre Simon, A Calendar of Food and Wine, was also a significant contribution. Her many other works, such as the Complete Hostess and Cooking for the Sick and Convalescent, underscored the versatility and contextual nature of the culinary arts. Yet perhaps none of her works are more widely regarded than Cooking With Wine. As the front flap of this second edition notes, “When Miss Heaton’s book was first published, wine was a luxurious ingredient for dashing cooks rebelling against post-war austerities.” Ultimately, though, her work helped to popularize wine as an ingredient in countless recipes and homes across the world. For any cookbook collector or connoisseur, Cooking With Wine is an essential volume.

This second edition is in very good condition. In the original full cloth boards, very good with only minor spotting to front board and very minor rubbing to edges. Gilt spine label still bright. Text block fine. In the original dust jacket, very good with small closed tears, rubbing to edges, and crease to front flap.

A very good vintage copy of Cooking With Wine.
