Quotations From Confucius. Edited by Kongzi Mingyan Lu. Concertina Edition. Higher Education Press. Beijing, 2006.

$60.00

Ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius underpins much of Eastern philosophy. He lived in the 5th century BC, at a time when hundreds of philosophical ideologies were competing across China. His teachings, often referred to as Confucianism, ultimately lasted despite suppression during the Qin dynasty and centuries of other ways of thinking making their own claims to the ideologies of Chinese culture. The core of Confucius’s teachings is harmony–harmony with the world, society, and our relationships. His Analects were compiled after his death, becoming foundational to his legacy. In this slim concertina edition, many of his sayings are presented in both Chinese and English. The presentation is beautiful, with full pages showcasing the Chinese text parallel to the English translations. The concertina structure of the book is unique today, but it was common in ancient China, making this volume a brilliant traditional representation of Confucius’s quotations.

This concertina edition is in fine condition. In the original black cloth boards, fine with bright copper stamping. Concertina text block fine, bottom corners dyed red.

A brilliant bilingual presentation of Confucius’s quotations, wonderfully bound.
