The Call of the Wild. By Jack London. Illustrated by Henry Varnum Poor. Illustrated Edition. Heritage Press. New York, 1960.

$42.00

In his lifetime, Jack London was one of America’s most internationally celebrated authors. He remains popular today for his many novels and short stories. He was also a politically active author–an outspoken socialist and animal rights advocate, which set him apart from his era, yet also someone who held bigoted racial beliefs and preoccupations with eugenics, ideas that are abhorrent but were somewhat common for his time. His most lasting literary contributions are probably The Call of the Wild and White Fang, two novels set in Alaska with the beloved canine characters Buck and White Fang. These works are noted for their stark portrayal of the Alaskan wilderness, their adventurous narratives, and their engaging prose. In this illustrated edition of The Call of the Wild, London’s characters appear vividly in image and in text. The illustrations are by Henry Varnum Poor, the 20th century muralist with a long resume of great wilderness imagery. His illustrations here capture the icy green of Alaska, and bring Buck’s adventure to life.

This illustrated edition is in fine condition. In the original half faux leather spine with decoratively dyed green boards, fine. Text block fine. Speckled edges. Poor’s illustrations superb. In the publisher’s original slipcase, about fine with only minor fading. With the publisher’s original Sandglass pamphlet, fine.

A fine collector’s copy of The Call of the Wild.
