The Cocktail Party. By T.S. Eliot. First Edition, Second Printing, Mixed State. Harcourt, Brace, & Co. New York, 1950.

$60.00

Of the several plays produced during T.S. Eliot’s lifetime, The Cocktail Party saw the most critical and commercial success. It is a highly unusual play, opening with what seems to be a predictable lover’s comedy where stale romance is rekindled with newfound appreciation. Yet the work becomes magical, absurdist, and, in some ways, deeply philosophical. It premiered on Broadway in 1950 and ran for over 400 performances. Published after Eliot had won the Nobel Prize for Literature, The Cocktail Party was highly anticipated. It is one of the most notable contributions of the latter half of his career.

This first edition, second printing is a mixed state with leaf 35/36 not a cancel leaf and page 94 not corrected. Printing code is b.3.50. In the original black cloth boards, near fine with only minor rubbing to edges. Text block near fine, only former owner’s signature in pencil on the front endpaper. In the original dust jacket, very good with only minor closed tears and chipping to back flap, minor bumps, and minor fading to spine. This is the first American edition.

A very good copy of T.S. Eliot’s The Cocktail Party.
