A Wonder Book. By Nathaniel Hawthorne. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham. First American Trade Edition. Doran. New York, 1922.

$320.00

A Wonder Book by Nathaniel Hawthorne proves the great American author’s range and versatility. It was first published in 1851, at the height of Hawthorne’s literary career, under the title A Wonder-Book for Boys and Girls. The fairy tales are classical in origin, recounting Greek myths of Medusa, King Midas, the Chimaera, and others. They are easily some of the best fairy tales ever told, and Hawthorne’s renditions are considered the best of the last two centuries. They remained popular for decades, with artists regularly issuing new illustrated editions. Of these illustrated editions, none are so prized and beloved as Arthur Rackham’s. He is without question one of the greatest book illustrators of all time, for good reason: Rackham’s full color plates capture the magic and beauty of Hawthorne’s narrations. He issued many illustrated fairy tale collections. A Wonder Book is one of the most sought-after.

This first American trade edition is in very good condition. In the original red cloth boards, very good with decorative gilt stamping. Only minor fading to spine. Text block about fine, only very minor lean. Text block contains all 24 full page plates, 16 of which are tipped in. Rackham’s plates are superb. Without the scarce original dust jacket. Preceded only by the signed limited edition of only 600 copies. Published simultaneously with the first British trade edition.

A very good first American trade edition of A Wonder Book, the classic fairy tale collection by Nathaniel Hawthorne, illustrated by Arthur Rackham.
