Dr. Edgar Mitchell was a navy officer, engineer, and astronaut. In 1971, as part of the Apollo 14 mission, he piloted the lunar module and became the sixth person to walk on the moon. Mitchell was also an outspoken ufologist. On numerous occasions, he expressed his belief that UFOs were real and that they were operated by extraterrestrials. He also publicly conjectured that U.S. government officials and military personnel were hiding information about UFOs. Mitchell was also deeply interested in paranormal consciousness. After his career at NASA, he went on to found the Institute of Noetic Sciences, a nonprofit that studies parapsychological phenomena. In 1996 he published this volume, The Way of the Explorer: An Apollo Astronaut’s Journey Through the Material and Mystical Worlds. It is a study of his own parapsychological experiences. In The Way of the Explorer, Mitchell argues that “we live in a universe that is not predetermined by the laws of physics, nor preordained by deities, nor infinitely malleable. While human intentions are generally subject to the laws of physics, these laws are also influenced by the mind” (back flap).
