Jerome David Salinger experienced a meteoric rise as the author of Catcher in the Rye, a novel often listed as one of the best ever written. Salinger had been publishing stories consistently in the years before his breakthrough novel, but nothing could have prepared him for the widespread attention he received for Catcher in the Rye. In response, he became reclusive–so much so that public perception of him today is primarily concerned with the mystery of his isolation. Yet much of it is exaggerated. While Salinger did not make public appearances, he continued to write and live with family and friends, experiencing by all accounts a full life outside the public sphere. In those decades, he published several notable titles, including this volume that contains two novellas: Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters, and Seymour: an Introduction. It was a bestseller when published in 1963 and has remained one of Salinger’s most beloved works. It was first issued without the dedication page–a publisher’s error that was corrected by the third issue, with the dedication page appearing after the copyright page, as it is here in this copy.

This first edition, third issue is in very good condition. In the original full cloth boards, very good with only fading to spine and bumping to corner. Text block near fine with only rubbing to edges. Interior clean. In the original dust jacket, very good with only closed tear and bumping to front flap, sympathetically taped, chipping to edges of spine, and minor fading to spine.

A very good first edition, third issue of one of Salinger’s best works.
