John Brown’s Body. By Stephen Vincent Benét. Illustrations by Stephen Alcorn. Illustrated Edition. Franklin Library. Franklin center, 1986.

$40.00

Stephen Vincent Benét was a poet with deeply held American ideals. He grew up in a military family, and throughout his life he grappled with the more romantic aspects of American culture as well as the more brutal realities of its history. A two-time Pulitzer Prize for Poetry winner, he was one of the most regarded poets in his lifetime, seeing broad readership across the country alongside other great artists like Robert Frost, Wallace Stevens, and others. Benét’s greatest work, however, is undoubtedly John Brown’s Body, an epic poem that captures so much of American culture and its perspective on the Civil War. First published in 1928, it was a bestseller by any genre’s standards, but especially for poetry, selling over 100,000 copies. It won Benét his first Pulitzer Prize.

This illustrated edition is in fine condition. In the original faux leather boards and spine, elaborately gilt stamped. Raised bands. Text block fine. Gilt edges. Alcorn’s illustrations are superb.

A fine collector’s copy of John Brown’s Body.
