Robert Penn Warren affected American letters on multiple fronts. He was one of many great Southern authors from the mid-twentieth century, writing alongside William Faulkner, Flannery O’Connor, and many others. Yet he was set apart by his ability to write both fiction and poetry. He is the only person to have ever won Pulitzer Prizes in both genres. In 1947, he won the Pulitzer for his novel All the King’s Men. He then won the Pulitzer for poetry twice–the first in 1958, the second in 1979. He was also a noted literary critic whose reviews and contributions applied a New Critic’s eye. For all these accomplishments, he is widely recognized as one of the greatest literary figures of the last 100 years. In this poetry collection, New and Selected Poems: 1923 – 1985, Warren brings together a brilliant sampling of his career. In his Special Message for the First Edition, he describes how, at a young age, he secretly “began to try to write poems”, but that the form took decades to master. This signed limited first edition is an excellent representation of his poetic genius.

This signed limited first edition is in fine condition. In the full brown leather boards with gilt stamping, especially fine. Raised bands. Text block fine. Gilt edges. Marbled endpapers. Silk bookmark sewn in. Warren’s signature appears on the front endpaper. With two copies of the publisher’s original collector’s letter.

A fine signed limited first edition by Robert Penn Warren.
