Murder in the Cathedral. By T.S. Eliot. Second Edition, Later Printing. Harcourt, Brace & Co. New York, circa 1945.

$25.00

Murder in the Cathedral is T.S. Eliot’s drama depicting the assassination of Archbishop Thomas Becket in the Canterbury Cathedral. The assassination occurred in 1170, making Canterbury a place of pilgrimage for centuries afterwards. This tradition inspired Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. T.S. Eliot’s drama revitalizes the history and adds to the tradition as well, but of course with his Modernist aesthetic.

Near fine in the original black cloth boards, only rubbing to foot of spine. Text block near fine, only owner’s pen and pencil marks to endpapers. In a later issue dust jacket, very good with only fading to spine and rubbed corners. Back flap lists Eliot’s other works Four Quartets and Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, indicating this jacket was issued after 1944.

A very good vintage copy of T.S. Eliot’s notable drama.
