As the second installment in the series, Chamber of Secrets proved that JK Rowling and her wizarding universe were going to become a cultural force. It describes Harry’s second year at Hogwarts–full of confrontations with the spider Aragog, the heir to Slytherin, and the basilisk. The book also develops Harry’s friendships with Ron and Hermione. Upon publication, it quickly became a bestseller. Critics and general readership agreed that Chamber of Secrets would be read and re-read by adoring fans for decades. In 2002, it was adapted to film alongside the rest of the Harry Potter series.
