Henry James was a late nineteenth and early twentieth century novelist who ushered in literary modernism. He was born in America but emigrated to England. He began publishing in the 1870s and produced a remarkable number of literary classics. His works are known for their mastery of the internal lives of their characters, a quality renowned by the modernists who followed him. In The Ambassadors, James provides a novel about the emotional liberation of its protagonist, Lewis Lambert Strether, an American expatriate in France. It is widely considered one of James’s best works and an important bridge between realism and modernism.
