In My Life, Johnson provides a memoir recounting his incredible basketball career up to 1992. That year was notable because it followed his abrupt retirement after an HIV diagnosis. At the time, such a diagnosis was deeply shocking. The HIV epidemic was at its height and Johnson was one of the first major figures to come out publicly about his diagnosis. There was tremendous stigma around the disease, making it difficult for him to maintain a place in the NBA. In this memoir, however, he remains candid about his experiences–both his love for basketball and his health struggles. Yet the work demonstrates his resolve. It proved to be a new beginning for Magic Johnson. Since its publication, he has gone on to be a successful investor, team owner, and advocate for healthcare.
