Richard Oakes was a Mohawk activist and scholar who became a major figure in the Red Power Movement of the mid-twentieth century. He was one of the leaders of the occupation of Alcatraz, the protest that galvanized Native Americans and their supporters. He advocated for educational programs and other services for Native tribes. He was charismatic and impactful, but sadly, he was assassinated in 1972 at thirty years of age. In this biography, scholar Kent Blansett recounts Oakes’ incredible life and work in activism. Blansett, a Native American scholar at the University of Nebraska, writes authoritatively and effectively. It is the first book-length biography of Richard Oakes, a much needed scholarly contribution to the history of American activism.
