American author James Jones was a celebrated novelist whose literary depictions of WWII were some of the best of the era. Jones served in the U.S. Army during the war. He witnessed the attack on Pearl Harbor and fought in the Guadalcanal campaign. He returned to the U.S. after becoming wounded and began writing fiction. The result was some of the best war novels of WWII. His debut novel, From Here to Eternity, took several years to complete. It recounts the U.S. military experience in Hawaii just before Pearl Harbor. Its rich cast of characters and looming sense of the war was highly praised by critics and readers alike. It won the National Book Award in 1952 and invited its highly acclaimed sequel, The Thin Red Line. It was also adapted to film in 1953. The film was also highly acclaimed, winning Best Picture. From Here to Eternity remains one of the best war novels ever written and a classic of the twentieth century.
This first trade edition, first printing is in very good condition. In the original cloth, very good with some minor rubbing, creasing, and closed tears to spine and rubbing to boards.
