In 1998, Louis Sachar published Holes, a young adult novel about Stanley Yelnats who is wrongfully convicted of stealing collectible tennis shoes. The novel follows Stanley to a correctional facility where he and other teens are forced to dig holes across a dried lakebed. As Stanley finds his way among his fellow inmates, a mystery unravels–one full of villains, beloved friends and characters, and buried treasure. Holes is widely regarded as one of the best YA novels of the last century. It won a Newbery Medal, a National Book Award, and many other accolades. It is Sachar’s most celebrated work. In 2003, it was also adapted to film, starring a young Shia LaBeouf, Sigourney Weaver, and Jon Voight. It remains one of the most popular YA stories of a generation.
