Louise Erdrich has steadily published exceptional fiction for the last four decades. The success of her first novel, Love Medicine, all but guaranteed her a writer’s life. Yet her recognition as one of the best American writers of the era has been slow to follow. It took many decades, but in the 2010s and early 2020s she won both the National Book Award for Fiction and the Pulitzer Prize. Literary historians have subsequently placed her (rightfully so) among America’s greatest writers. The Master Butchers Singing Club is one of her best works. It is considered a departure from her usual focus on Native American communities. It instead follows a family of German immigrants who end up in North Dakota.
