American author Gregory Maguire is a master of fiction for both children and adults. He has written dozens of novels, the widely acclaimed being his Wicked series. They revitalized the Oz universe by subverting its politics and characterizations, revealing counternarratives for the Wicked Witch of the West and others. In this volume, however, Maguire lends his talents to a different and older story: E.T.A. Hoffman’s German fairytale about the Nutcracker. This familiar work was retold by Alexander Dumas which subsequently inspired the ballet of the same name. Maguire traverses this history, arriving at the story with a fresh set of eyes. Like his Wicked series, it subverts the narrative and offers perspectives from a different character: Godfather Drosselmeier, the toymaker. Hiddensee proves yet again Maguire’s talents.
