Joe Biden was an elected representative for many decades. He served as a U.S. Senator from 1973 to 2009. He was then elected Vice President under Barack Obama, and then, from 2020 to 2024, he served as the 46th President of the United States. As president, he passed major infrastructure and manufacturing legislation. He saw the country out of the COVID pandemic. He supported climate initiatives, student loan forgiveness, and organized labor. His foreign policy proved contentious, with unmitigated support for Israel and a tumultuous withdrawal from Afghanistan, but ultimately it was Biden’s health that proved the greatest concern for America’s populace, causing him to prematurely end his campaign for reelection in 2024. In Promises to Keep, however, none of these major events had yet taken place. The work is Biden’s origin story–a memoir about his childhood, his tragedies, and his life as Senator of Delaware. The work documents his many personal struggles, including his childhood speech impediment, the death of his first wife and daughter in a car accident, and his brain aneurysms and recovery. Published ahead of the 2008 presidential campaign, Promises to Keep played a major role in presenting Biden on a national stage.
