Fables. By John Gay. Signed by Illustrator Gillian Lewis Tyler. Signed Limited Edition. Imprint Society. Barre, 1970.

$45.00

English author John Gay produced numerous poems and plays in the eighteenth century. He was a major literary figure whose works became extremely popular, especially after the success of The Beggar’s Opera, a satirical ballad that became internationally renowned. Gay also had numerous royal patrons who subscribed to his poetry. These connections drove Gay to write his Fables–a series of poems featuring beasts, anecdotes, and characters inspired by the ancient tradition. A full collection of his fables was published after his death and became a significant work of English literature. Many illustrated editions have been published since then. In this edition, renowned twentieth century engraver Gillian Lewis Tyler adds her own edition to the long history of great illustrated renditions of Gay’s Fables. Her 66 wood engravings feature surreal, mature, and elaborate imagery that perfectly complement the text. It is one of the best illustrated editions of Gay’s Fables from the past two centuries.

This signed limited edition is signed by Tyler on the colophon. It is in near-fine condition. In the original quarter cloth, near-fine with only rubbing to spine ends. Text block fine. In the original slipcase, about-fine with only fading and soiling. This copy is one of only 1,950 copies signed by Tyler.
