Tony Hillerman was an American novelist who wrote a prolific number of detective novels and true crime non-fiction. His works are deeply infused with Southwest culture. His characters are emblematic of the place and his depictions of the Southwest are sincere. He is considered one of the most notable authors from New Mexico where he lived and worked for most of his life. For his contributions, he won several genre fiction awards, including Anthony Awards and Agatha Awards. Hillerman was also a decorated veteran, earning a Purple Heart in WWII. Of all his novels, none is more scarce and sought-after than The Blessing Way. It is the first novel featuring Joe Leaphorn, Hillerman’s beloved protagonist, a Tribal Police officer who becomes a staple of Hillerman’s most successful series. It was Hillerman’s first novel as well. While the initial response was positive, it did not garner as much attention as some of his later works, but it is no less important. Without The Blessing Way, Hillerman’s career–and his outstanding mystery series–would never have come to fruition.

This first edition, first printing is in good condition. In the original quarter cloth, very good with only fading and soiling to cloth spine, and rubbing to corners. Text block very good, only minor soiling to top edge and the recipient’s name of Hillerman’s inscription unfortunately erased with some furiosity. Hillerman’s signature and salutation are untouched. In the original dust jacket, good with chips, creases, and closed tears.
